Have you ever received a gift from someone that just kept on giving? Those are the gifts of value that I like to find. There are actually a lot of gifts that fall into that category. I received a sewing machine from my mother when I graduated from High School. It wasn’t a very exciting gift at the time, but gave and gave over the years as I made clothes for myself and my family, stitched up crafts, gifts for others, quilted with it, hemmed up tons of pant legs, took in lots of waist bands, and created curtains and pillows for my home. I still have that machine. It’s 35 years old now and still chugging along. Many times I have reflected thankfully upon the gift giver as well as the gift. I consider it a tool of great value as it provided years of service, brought joy to myself and others, and was a great outlet for creative energy. It’s also a gift that I will give one day to a daughter, and while it still has the ability, will continue to give.
Journals are like that. They give endlessly to the owner of the journal and to all who may read it one day. Journals give in a different way than most gifts. They enrich, heal, reveal, instruct, verify, calm, and provide enjoyment to the soul. They reach deep within us and help us see and understand so much more about ourselves. They help us make sense of our lives and the world we live in. They aren’t merely a place to record the facts of the day – which also has value. Have you ever needed to unload a heavy burden and didn’t have anyone you felt you could tell? A journal is a great sounding board. Think about the times in life when you laughed so hard you cried. Recording those moments and the stories or incidents behind them bring back the same feelings of happiness every time you read it. I could go on and on sharing the priceless virtues of journaling. And, I will – another time.
For now, think about giving a journal the next time you are looking for a gift of great value – one that keeps giving and giving and giving.
